Gene Kelley Ride – C Group

Event Details

October 3, 2023 6:33 am

Start Location: NW corner of La Costa and El Camino Real, Carlsbad

Beginning in south Carlsbad, this classic Swami’s route starts north along the coast, then heads inland for some short climbing challenges. For this ride, the coast portion is conducted as a double paceline (2×2), but is not a circular or rotating paceline like done on the Swami’s B group. The ride regroups at the end of Carlsbad Village Drive after turning right onto College, and again after turning right from Faraday onto College.

This ride is conducted at a C group speed: approximately 18-22 mph on flat ground, with overall averages in the 16-18 mph range. It’s also suggested for those in the front of the D group looking for a challenge. The route is the same each week. We suggest familiarizing yourself with the route and having it handy in case you get separated from the group.

Riders who ride at the front of the C group and are experienced with rotating pacelines may want to try the Swami’s B group, which is the second group to leave.

Order of Rides:
A Group – (Pro & race pace ride) leaves at 6:30. This is one of the fastest rides around.
B Group – (Race/Fast paced ride) leaves after A, around 6:32. This is probably also one of the faster rides around, but doable for experienced riders (averages 18+ overall on a hilly route).
C Group – Leaves after B, around 6:33. This is a great tempo/interval workout.

Social: Meet at La Costa Coffee Roasting afterward for coffee with the group.

22 miles, 1800′

If you get dropped or miss the start by a few minutes, there are several short cuts that will get you back on the ride. Cutting across and heading east at Tamarack Drive, or Carlsbad Village Drive, will get you back in touch with the group. Other route cutoffs are heading due east on Faraday to El Camino Real which cuts out the uphills of Aviara, and Poinsettia.

Safety is always first. Each cyclist is responsible for following health and cycling safety guidelines as well as traffic laws.
